Arirang and Me

Korea for the World, The World for Korea

It was the tagline of full english broadcasting service in Korea dedicated to bringing information about Korea to the world, and to non-Koreans within Korea.

Founded in 1996, Arirang TV airs news, cultural programs, educational shows, documentaries and more 24 hours a day, in more than 188 countries. As Korea’s full English broadcast channel, Arirang’s mission is to present an accurate view of Korea to the world through unbiased news reports and programs featuring a diversity of perspectives. Viewers with little knowledge about Korea or with an outdated impression of the country can feel the pulse of the fast-changing nation through Arirang.

The networks name, Arirang, is derived from the traditional Korean folk song of the same name. Eventhough the word “Arirang” is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning, I felt that we could understand more about the word by listening to the song

This Arirang was brought by NY Philharmonic ochestra in Pyong Yang, North Korea. I found this song is very peaceful and in the same time, joyful and giving spirit to its listener ^^V.

————————————————– In English: -Verse 1- Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo… Arirang gogaero neomeoganda. Nareul beorigo gasineun nimeun Simnido motgaseo balbyeongnanda Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo… I am crossing over Arirang Pass. The man/woman who abandoned me Will not walk even ten li before his/her feet hurt. -Verse 2- Cheongcheonghaneuren byeoldo manko Urine gaseumen kkumdo manta Just as there are many stars in the clear sky, There are also many dreams in our heart. -Verse 3- Jeogi jeo sani Baekdusaniraji Dongji seotdaredo kkonman pinda There, over there that mountain is Baekdu Mountain, Where, even in the middle of winter days, flowers bloom. ————————————————-

Arirang features so many interesting things on their show, one of them is my favorite ROKETship blog, the blog that shows the interesting cultural shock in Korea.

Sadly, I just recently heard that Luke would write any ROKETship update no more. He and his wife had returned to US and he said that the comic strip wouldn’t have the same edge if he tried to continue it away from Korea. :(

The good news is that the web is going no where and ROKetBooks will still be on sale through [ not such a good news, I'm still sad with this end :'( ]

Arirang feature many things about Korea, starting from the Korean cultures, showbizs, style, sports, to the foreign and foreigner things in Korea. I even had them interviewing me in Insadong. They asked my opinion about dead punishment for corruptor in China. It seems that they always posts there almost every weekend.

Here is Arirang introducing Taekwondo. I had taekwondo training quite a long time ago. This video’s quite interesting since I’d never known if there’s a play (drama) about taekwondo ^^.
